Fantastical Forms

St John's Smith Square, St John's Church Smith Square, SW1P 3HA , [Venue Details]

Playful modern chamber works blending classical tradition with jazz and imagination.

This lunchtime concert spans Tokyo to Ukraine, with two pieces that are full of character and wit. This interesting fusion meets at a playful centre, eccentric in their own ways.

Takashi Yoshimatsu’s suite for piano and percussion, was inspired by the grinning cat in Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

Nikolai Kapustin’s high-energy trio for flute, cello and piano combines jazz and classical chamber music, a hallmark of his style. Though the work is notoriously dense, with rapid interplay between the instruments, it is often described as sounding like improvisation, despite every note being meticulously notated.
